Ulkatcho Energy Corporation (UEC), part of the Ulkatcho Group of Companies and 100% owned by Ulkatcho First Nation, is developing the facility as its first renewable energy venture. The project includes a 3.8 MW photovoltaic solar array and a 600 V–25 kV step-up substation that will connect to the local utility system serving Anahim Lake and Nimpo Lake.
Planning began in 2022, when the Ulkatcho Group of Companies engaged engineering and owner’s representative teams to complete planning studies, detailed engineering and construction planning. Construction began in 2024, followed by construction completion and cold commissioning in late 2025. Station service was energized through the local 25 kV distribution system in January 2026. The solar facility will operate as part of a broader community microgrid.

In parallel with the solar development, BC Hydro is upgrading the Anahim Lake Station with a battery energy storage system (BESS) and microgrid control system that will help integrate solar power while maintaining a reliable electricity supply for the community. Together, these systems will support greater use of renewable energy across Anahim Lake and Nimpo Lake. UEC also holds a multi-year Community Electricity Purchase Agreement with the local utility for the electricity generated by the solar facility.
As the project enters its next phase, Barkley is coordinating with engineering, construction, utility and technical partners to support commissioning, microgrid integration and the transition to operations.
During Barkley’s September visit, the project team reviewed work at the solar facility and toured the newly renovated office and maintenance building. Created within an existing structure on the former sawmill, planer and lumber yard site, the building marks another stage in the property’s transformation. Inside, portraits of Elders from the Ulkatcho community create a visible connection between the new energy infrastructure and the community it serves.
