Owned By: Binche Whut'en First Nation
Status: Exploration
Project Start Date: 2023
Project Completion Date : TBD

Binche Whut’en First Nation, through its economic arm Binche Keyoh Development Corporation, is leading a geothermal exploration project at Tchentlo Lake Lodge in the Nechako region of British Columbia. Located near the Tchentlo Lake Warm Springs, the project is exploring the potential to develop the lodge into an eco-tourism destination powered by clean, renewable energy.

The current phase involves drilling a deep geothermal test well to assess the presence and strength of a viable geothermal reservoir. A second, shallower well will also be drilled and tested as a potential source of potable water for the lodge. Alongside drilling, surface geoscience work and water quality analysis will help refine the subsurface model and inform long-term development planning.

The project explores multiple potential benefits of geothermal energy, including year-round heating for the lodge, greenhouse operations, spa or onsen-style facilities, and wood or pellet drying—each of which could contribute to sustainable, local economic development. Geothermal development also aligns with Binche’s Community Energy Plan, which prioritizes reducing reliance on fossil fuels and creating opportunities for renewable energy.

Community engagement is central to the project’s design, with planned activities designed to ensure that leadership and the community shape future geothermal developments. The project also creates local employment and builds capacity for long-term participation in renewable energy, tourism, and food security sectors.

Binche is leading an innovative approach to self-determined economic development and environmental stewardship in the North.
