Kitsumkalum Community Energy Plan

The largest renewable energy resource assessment Barkley Project Group has facilitated to date covering a land area of approximately 8,500 km2.

Project Type: CEP
Energy Types Assessed: Hydro, Wind and Biomass
Owned By: Ts’msyen Nation
Status: Completed
Project Start Date: 2019
Project Completion Date: 2020

Kitsumkalum is located on the BC Central Coast, near Prince Rupert, and is a community of the Ts’msyen (Tsimshian) Nation. Ts’msyen (Tsimshian) translates to “Inside the Skeena River” in Sm’algyax, the language of the Kitsumkalum people.

As part of the Kitsumkalum Community Energy Plan, BPG undertook a commercial hydropower and wind resource assessment covering the entire Kitsumkalum consultative area. This is the largest renewable energy resource assessment Barkley Project Group has facilitated to date, including the development of a GIS model covering an area of approximately 8,500 km2. The region experiences significant freshet due to snowmelt, resulting in significant hydropower potential. Fifty potential hydropower configurations were identified and reviewed from a high-level constructability perspective, using screening criteria to identify the most promising sites.

This project has received support from the Province of BC.
